Transgender issues are finding their way into more and more Irish lives, but what does the painful business of transitioning from one sex to another actually feel like?

That weighty theme is brilliantly dramatised by Lucas Dhont’s insightful Belgian film Girl.

Victor Polster is Lara, a 15-year-old transgender girl who’s ever more impatient to complete the medical procedures that will allow her to fully join the sex she’s always identified with.

As if all of that isn’t daunting enough, she’s also training to become a ballerina. She’s staunchly supported by her single father, but as Lara piles more pressure on herself, something has to give.

Girl is beautifully made: it’s also an education.
